The Central Maine Egg Festival has traditionally been a celebration of the brown egg industry and is held annually on the fourth Saturday of July in Manson Park. It is the event of the year in Pittsfield. Activities are held in and around the downtown area for the preceding five days, with a parade and the Kiwanis Karnival held on Saturday. The Egg Festival Committee begins early in the year planning the event, with numerous civic groups participating to hold events or set up booths. In addition to the parade, there is an Early Bird Breakfast, chicken barbecue, street dance, “Egglympics”, craft fair and fireworks. The Kiwanis Karnival offers rides. The Egg Festival offers an opportunity for the entire community to celebrate and for civic groups to raise needed funds.
Founded in 1973, the Festival was designed to celebrate the egg industry in central Maine and complement the already popular Kiwanis Karnival. Though the egg industry has all but left the region, the Festival remains strong many years later. Now the Festival prides itself in providing a venue for area non-profit groups to come together and make their causes known to visitors who come to enjoy this family friendly festival.
The town of Pittsfield is home to the Festival. A quiet community of just over 4,000 people, Pittsfield welcomes the thousands of visitors each July. A street dance, egglympics, window painting, and a bike rodeo are just a few of the scheduled events during the week leading to the Big Parade Day on Saturday.
