Old Fire Department Photos from the 1950s.
These photos are from an album full of photos related to the Pittsfield Fire Department from the 1950s. Few of the photos have anything written on the backs, and little is known of what they are actually photos of. Any assistance that anyone can provide would be most appreciated. Best guesses as to the year, the event, or the identity of any of the people in the photos, would be appreciated. The album was donated in June 2019 by Don Hallenbeck who got it from Ed Paradis, who in turn was given it by a lady he had helped. Click on photos to enlarge them.
This photo tells a wonderful story of bygone days in Pittsfield. There on Main Street, with the Lancey House in the background on the right, are two groups of men engaged in a tug-‘o-war whle being sprayed with a hose to the delight of the crowd of assembled onlookers. This photo provides one of the few views of the east side of Main Street in this era. Anyone know what was the occasion of this event? Who the tugging teams were?
A photo entitled simply “New Fire Truck”, these three men are proud of their town’s new acquisition. Any idea what their names are? In the background are the buildings (now gone) on the other side of Park Street (now Somerset Ave). The fire station is still in the basement of what was once Union Hall.
More photos to appear in the coming days and weeks, so stay tuned.
